Three Jubo League leaders have been shot and wounded in a clash with the supporters of a local Awami League leader in Patiya Upazila of Chittagong.

The incident took place in Amjurhat area of the upazila on Tuesday night.

The injured were identified as Jamir Uddin, 53, ex-joint convener of Patia municipality unit Jubo League, and two former assistant secretaries of Haidgaon union Jubo League – Saiful Islam, 38, and Iqbal, 40.

According to locals and police sources, AL upazila unit Member Mujibul Haque Chowdhury and Joint General Secretary of central unit Jubo League Mohammad Badiul Alam have been at loggerheads over establishing supremacy in the area.

Panchlaish police station Inspector Sadiqur Rahman said that the Jubo League leaders were attacked by 10-12 people as a sequel to the enmity when they were returning after inviting a Freedom Fighter to the Upazila Jubo League's Iftar celebration on Tuesday night.

The injured were first admitted to Chittagong General Hospital and were later moved to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

However, their health is in a good condition now.

Legal action would be taken against those involved in the incident after getting a complaint, said Rezaul Karim Majumdar, officer-in-charge of Patiya police station.

Meanwhile, as information of the incident spread, Jubo league supporters staged a protest procession later that night on the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar Highway.

Badiul Alam, joint general secretary of the Central Jubo League, said the iftar arrangement of the Upazila Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League was scheduled for next Saturday at a convention centre.

The criminals, who were already in ambush, suddenly attacked them while handing the event invitation cards. “I demand a fair trial in the incident.”

Later, police obstructed the protest and the situation became normal.
