An allegation has been raised against an assistant professor of the Department of Women and Gender Studies of Dhaka University for developing a physical relation with a student of a different religion giving a promise to marry her.
The accused teacher married another girl on September 22 this year after continuing the physical relations with the victim student for more than a year on the promise of marriage.
The girl filed a written complaint to the chairperson of the department on October 8 after hearing the news of his marriage.
The copy of the complaint has also been sent to the Vice-Chancellor ASM Maksud Kamal, Dean Zia Rahman of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Proctor Maksudur Rahman.
In the written complaint, the student accused that the teacher used to advise her about career and higher education. Besides, he used to talk about her personal life, loneliness, higher education etc to her. At one stage, the teacher proposed to marry her on April 25 last year.
But she rejected this proposal due to religious differences.
“Even though I told him to behave normally, he used to call and message me several times to share his weakness towards me. At some point, I also sympathized with him. Later our relationship started on October 3 last year with his promise of marriage.”
The student said: “After a few days of relationship, he offered me to come to his residence. When I went to his house on November 5 last year, he initially behaved normally but later had a physical relation against my unwillingness. In this incident I broke physically and mentally. He then assured me again that he would marry me and said that he would live outside the country if necessary."
“On September 10, the accused teacher had a physical relation with me at his home for the last time. On September 17, he gave me the same proposal but I declined this time. Later on 22 September, he married another girl, keeping the matter secret to me. I came to know this on 24 September. When I spoke to him about this, he could not give me any good answer."
In this regard, Dean Zia Rahman of the Faculty of Social Sciences told the media that they have started working on it. Good progress has been made.
“We are doing the work so that the girl gets justice. The university administration is cooperating with us,” said the dean.
