Chittagong top BCL leader indicted in arms case

A Chittagong court has indicted Chhatra League Chittagong city unit General Secretary Nurul Azim Rony in an arms case. Framing the charges on Monday, the court of Chittagong Seventh Additional District and Session Judge Jannatul Ferdaous fixed November 4 for recording the deposition. Defence counsel Iftekhar Saimul Chowdhury said they pleaded before the court to discharge Rony's name from the case but the court rejected the plea. Earlier, Hathazari police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Delwar Hossain, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted the charge sheet implicating Rony before the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Sahidullah Kaisar on June 19, 2016. Rony was arrested in possession of a 9mm pistol, 15 rounds of bullets, cash money amounting to Tk26,000, and a rubber stamp near a polling centre in Hathazari upazila during the fourth phase of the union parishad polls on May 7 last year. Later, a mobile court conducted by Judicial Magistrate Harunur Rashid sentenced him to two years’ imprisonment for breaching the electoral code of conduct. The arms case was lodged with Hathazari police station the same day, naming the Chhatra League leader who is now on bail.
