Court orders formal arrest of ex-MP Sultan Mansur in attempted murder case

A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered the formal arrest of former Moulvibazar-2 MP Sultan Mohammad Mansur Ahmed in an attempted murder case filed over an alleged attack on BNP activist Mushfiqur Rahman Abir.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jasita Islam of the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court passed the order after hearing an application from the investigating officer.

Sub-Inspector Md Abu Saleh of Paltan police station, the investigating officer in the case, produced Sultan Mansur before the court and sought an order for his formal arrest.

SI Roknuzzaman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Prosecution Division confirmed the matter.

During the hearing, the defence lawyer opposed the formal arrest, while state prosecutor Harun Or Rashid argued in favour of it. After hearing both sides, the court ordered Sultan Mansur’s formal arrest and directed that he be sent to jail.

According to the first information report (FIR), several people abducted Abir in a vehicle from the entrance to Road No 1 in Lake Circus, Kalabagan, on December 4, 2022, and assaulted him, leaving him unconscious.

He was then allegedly held at a tannery warehouse in Hazaribagh, where his mobile phone was seized and he was pressured to provide the phone numbers of his acquaintances.

The FIR alleges that the abductors demanded Tk10 lakh in ransom. Abir was released on the morning of December 5 after his family paid Tk5 lakh.

The case also refers to alleged attacks, gunfire, tear gas and baton charges in and around Nayapaltan during a BNP rally on December 10, 2022. It alleges that leaders and activists of the then-ruling party instigated and directed the incidents.

Abir filed the case, naming several people, including Sheikh Hasina, as accused.

The FIR further states that an attempt was made to file a case at Hazaribagh police station following the alleged abduction, but police did not register it at the time. The case was subsequently filed at Paltan police station on September 12, 2025.
