Professor AKM Jamal Uddin of Dhaka University’s Department of Sociology has been shown arrested in another anti-terrorism case after securing bail in a separate case.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam passed the order on Wednesday following a petition by the investigating officer, said SI Rokonuzzaman of the prosecution department.
Police arrested Jamal Uddin on March 11 while he was taking part in a programme titled “Bangabandhu Peace March-2026” at Gulistan Zero Point in the capital.
He was later shown arrested in an anti-terrorism case filed with Paltan Model Police Station and sent to jail the same day. He recently secured bail from the High Court in that case.
On October 1, SI Md Nuruzzaman of Paltan Model Police Station sought an order to show Jamal Uddin arrested in another anti-terrorism case filed with the same police station.
The court fixed Wednesday for the hearing, and Jamal Uddin was brought before it from jail.
Public prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon argued in favour of the police petition, while defence lawyer Md Khair Uddin Sikder opposed it.
After hearing both sides, the court reserved its order and later directed that Jamal Uddin be shown arrested in the case.
Advocate Md Khair Uddin Sikder said Jamal Uddin had secured bail from the High Court in an anti-terrorism case filed with Paltan Model Police Station. After the bail order was sent to the jail authorities, police sought to show him arrested in another case filed under the same law.
“He was shown arrested in the case today,” the lawyer said.
He also said Jamal Uddin is facing a case before the International Crimes Tribunal.
According to the case statement, members, financiers, advisers and instigators of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League gathered in Gulistan, Baitul Mukarram and adjoining areas on May 18, 2025, allegedly to carry out acts of sabotage and destruction.
Police conducted a raid in front of Hotel Imperial, opposite the south gate of Baitul Mukarram, and detained several people. Around 140–150 unidentified people fled in different directions.
Police filed the anti-terrorism case with Paltan Model Police Station the same day.
