Fourteen leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League, arrested from the house of former Barguna-2 MP Shaukat Hasanur Rahman Rimon, were sent to jail after completion of their remand.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir passed the order on Friday, October 2, following an application by the investigation officer.
SI Helal Uddin of the prosecution department confirmed the matter.
The accused sent to jail are Md Yakub Hossain Rajib, Arafat Mia, Rifat Hawladar, Hridoy Hasan, Fahim, Rajib Hossain Rana, Md Firoz, Md Arif, Md Omar Faruk, Abdullah Al Aman, Sohanur Hossain Shahin, Md Hasib and Hasib Mia.
On Monday at around 7pm, police conducted a raid at the house of the former Barguna-2 MP and arrested 15 people, including the 14 accused. The following day, a court granted 1-day remand for Farzana and 3-day remand for the other 14 accused.
Farzana was sent to jail after completion of her remand on Wednesday.
On Friday, investigation officer SI Iqbal Hossain of Uttara West police station produced the 14 accused before the court and sought their detention in jail.
Helal Uddin said: “Bail petitions were filed for 11 accused. There was no bail petition for 3. The court rejected the bail petitions of the 11 and then ordered all 14 to be sent to jail.”
According to the case details, workers of the banned Chhatra League, Jubo League and Swechhasebak League allegedly gathered at the house of former Barguna-2 MP Shaukat Hasanur Rahman Rimon in Sector 7 under Uttara West police station in the capital and prepared to commit anti-state offenses and terrorist activities with the aim of destabilizing the state and destroying state infrastructure.
After receiving the information, police conducted a raid after 5pm on Monday and detained the accused from inside a room. At the time, 20-22 unidentified accused allegedly fled the scene.
During a search, police seized 20 pages containing the names and biographical details of 20 candidates for positions in the Kakchira Union Committee of Swechhasebak League’s Patharghata upazila unit in Barguna district from inside a drawer of a table in the room.
During questioning, the detained accused said they were members of the banned Chhatra League of Uttara West police station.
A case was filed at Uttara West police station under the Anti-Terrorism Act in connection with the incident.
