Shreeshant Roy, a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), has been sent to jail following his remand in a case filed under the Cyber Security Act, 2023, for hurting religious sentiments.
After three days of remand, SI Shajahan Siraj of Chawkbazar police station presented him in court on Tuesday and requested his detention.
Metropolitan Magistrate Monirul Islam ordered him sent to jail.
SI Ashraful Islam of the prosecution confirmed the details and said Shreeshant’s bail request was rejected.
The case arose after a group of Buet students protested on October 21, demanding punishment for Shreeshant over allegations of sexual harassment, hurting religious sentiments, and cyberbullying of a classmate. He was taken into police custody that night by Chawkbazar police station,
The next day, Buet security officer Afghan Hossain filed a formal case against him at Chawkbazar police station.
He was shown arrested and sent to jail on the same day.
On October 23, the investigation officer, SI Shajahan Siraj, added the charge of hurting religious sentiments to the case.
On October 31, police applied for a three-day remand, and the hearing was set for November 5, when the court approved the remand.
According to the case, Shreeshant, using the pseudonymous ID "Weekly Service 923", allegedly posted various writings from June 8 to September 7 at Buet’s Ahsanullah Hall targeting Muslim women and Islam, including many “obscene, offensive, and religiously provocative” statements.
The complainant said that after extensive investigation, the person behind the pseudonymous account was identified as Shreeshant Roy.
