Ex-minister Faruk Khan, 3 others remanded in student murder case

A Dhaka court has granted a three-day remand for former minister of civil aviation and tourism Lt Col (retd) Faruk Khan and three others in connection with the murder case of Shamim, a student, in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area.

On Sunday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shahin Reza issued the remand order following a hearing.

Investigating Officer and Dhanmondi Sub-Inspector Monir Hossain filed an appeal on Sunday to show five individuals arrested and requested a five-day remand.

However, as former state minister for industry Nazrul Islam Mazumdar could not appear in court due to illness, the hearing only proceeded for the remaining four individuals.

The court approved their arrests before hearing the remand appeal, granting a three-day remand for each.

Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi argued in favor of the remand, while defense lawyers sought bail and cancellation of the remand.

After the hearing, the court approved the remand request.

According to case details, on August 5, Shamim participated in a protest march in Dhanmondi against discrimination.

When the march reached the Kalabagan area, leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations launched a sudden attack, injuring Shamim.

He was taken to Suhrawardy Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on August 6.

On October 3, Shamim's mother, Jahanara Begum, filed a murder case with Dhanmondi police station, naming 128 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Faruk Khan was arrested at his Dhaka residence on October 14.
