High Court seeks explanation on ilish stockpiling syndicate, price control failure

The High Court has issued a ruling asking why the government’s inaction in controlling the rising price of ilish due to alleged illegal stockpiling and syndicate activity should not be declared illegal.

The court also questioned why measures should not be taken to investigate those involved in the syndicate and regulate the price of ilish.

The High Court bench of Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Mobina Asaf issued the ruling following a preliminary hearing on the matter on Sunday.

The commerce secretary, fisheries and livestock secretary, chairman of the National Board of Revenue, and director general of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection have been asked to respond to the ruling.

Supreme Court lawyer Sheikh Rafiqul Islam represented the petitioner in court.

Earlier, lawyer Sheikh Rafiqul Islam filed a writ petition in the High Court, seeking directives to investigate the stockpiling and syndicate activities affecting ilish prices. Following the hearing, the court issued this ruling.
