Lutfor Molla, 35, former president of the Chhatra League Bhanga Upazila, has been sentenced to 17 years of rigorous imprisonment in an arms case.
The verdict was delivered on Tuesday afternoon by Additional District Judge Ashok Kumar Dutta at the Special Tribunal-2.
At the time of the verdict, Lutfor Molla was present in court.
According to case details, on January 14, 2019, based on a tip-off, a team from the District Detective Branch (DB) conducted a raid in Bhanga Bazar area at 10pm.
Lutfor Molla was arrested during the operation, and a foreign pistol, a magazine, and two rounds of ammunition were seized from him.
Following this, DB police Sub-Inspector Jewel Mia filed a case under the Arms Act.
Public Prosecutor (PP) Nawab Ali Miah of Special Tribunal-2 said that after a lengthy trial, the court delivered the verdict on the charge of possessing illegal firearms.
The court sentenced Lutfor Molla to 10 years and 7 years of rigorous imprisonment under two sections of the Arms Act of 1878. He has been directed to be sent to jail under police custody.
