Ex SC judge Shamsuddin Manik sent to jail

Former Appellate Division Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik has been sent to jail by the court.

Earlier, he was arrested under Section 54 and brought to court by the police and transported to court in a police prison van under tight security on Saturday.

Following the hearing at 4:30pm, Judicial Magistrate-1 of Sylhet, Alamgir Hossain, has ordered that Shamsuddin Manik be sent to jail. Police then transferred him to the Sylhet Central Jail.

This information was confirmed by Sylhet Court Police Inspector Jamshaid Alam.

Upon learning of Manik's court appearance, activists from various political groups, including the Chhatra Dal, gathered at the court premises from noon.

They chanted various slogans and threw shoes, kicked, and threw eggs at him while he was being transferred from the prison van to the courtroom.

Inspector Jamshed Alam said: “The former judge was arrested under Section 54 by the local police due to several murder and other charges filed against him at multiple police stations, including Badda and Adabar in Dhaka.

“After the court’s decision, we will notify the relevant police stations in Sylhet about his presence here. Those stations will then update their cases accordingly,” he added.

He also said that the court had directed that Manik receive all the benefits and medical care entitled to him as a former judge.

Previously, on Friday night former Judge Manik was apprehended by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) while attempting to flee to India through an illegal border crossing in Kanaighat, Sylhet.

He was handed over to Kanaighat police in the early hours of August 24.

A video circulating on social media shows Manik saying he was willing to pay money if needed and that his siblings would pay it.

He expressed his frustration, said: "I came to this country (India) with such difficulty, why would I return to Bangladesh?"

Another video depicts a person holding Manik by his gamcha (a traditional cloth) and asking his name. Manik then reveals his full name and his home in Munshiganj.

During questioning, Manik appeared quite distressed and said: "I had British and Bangladeshi passports and several bank credit cards. I was fleeing the country out of fear. Two youths here told me they would take me across the border for Tk15,000.

“After paying the money, they took me to the border but then beat me, seized Tk60-70 lakh and my mobile phone. After leaving me injured, they fled," he added.
