High Court concerned by ragging of IU student

The High Court has ordered the formation of a three-member investigation committee over the ragging of a female student of Islamic University, Kushtia.

The Kushtia deputy commissioner (DC) has been directed to form an inquiry committee comprising a judicial magistrate, an executive magistrate and an assistant teacher.

The High Court bench of Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil passed the order on Thursday.

The court ordered the formation of the committee within three days and the submission of a report within the next seven days.

At the same time, the court ordered the committee formed by the university administration to submit its report within 10 days.

Besides, two students involved in the abuse were asked to be kept outside the campus.

The court also asked the authorities to ensure the security of the victim student.

During the hearing, the court said such incidents in educational institutions are alarming.

Supreme Court lawyer Gazi Md Mohsin filed the writ petition in the public interest on Wednesday.

The secretaries of the home and education ministries, the IU vice chancellor, its registrar and proctor, and others concerned were made respondents in the writ.

Later, the writ was presented to the bench for hearing and the bench fixed Thursday to hear it.

Fulpori Khatun, a first-year student at the university, was reportedly tortured and harassed by IU Chhatra League Vice President Shanjida Chowdhury Ontora and her associates at Deshratno Sheikh Hasina Hall on Sunday night.

The incident surfaced after the victim left the hall and disclosed the matter to her seniors and her family members on Monday.

The victim on Tuesday submitted a complaint to the university proctor, student adviser and the hall provost, demanding punishment for those involved in the incident.

Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, formed a panel to probe into the ragging.

The university authorities also formed a five-member investigation committee earlier on Wednesday.

The committee, headed by IU law department chair Prof Reba Mondolat, was formed in a meeting with IU Vice Chancellor Prof Shaikh Abdus Salam in the chair.
