The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) of the central bank submitted a report on some 10 individuals or entities, named in Panama Papers and Paradise Papers, to the High Court on Wednesday.
They also submitted two lists of 69 Bangladeshi individuals, including these 10 individuals or entities, cited in the Panama Papers and Paradise Papers that leaked financial documents revealing corruption on a global scale, court sources said.
The BFUI prepared the report based on their initial investigation and information from the financial intelligence units (FIUs) of different other countries.
One of the lists comprises the names of 43 Bangladeshi individuals or entities published in Panama Papers and another list of 26 Bangladeshi individuals or entities published in Paradise Papers on the basis of media reports.
Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik submitted the report on behalf of the BFIU.
The High court on December 6, 2020 ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the BFIU to submit separate reports to the court by January 9.
The bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Md Mostafuzur Rahman set next Sunday for a hearing on the matter.
The BFIU report mentioned that the financial intelligence agency submitted 4,507 intelligence reports to various organizations, including the ACC, the CID, police, and the National Board of Revenue (NBR) over the last five years, after investigating and gathering information on money launderers from local and foreign sources.
On October 3, 2021, the HC said those who have built "Begum Paras" outside the country and siphoned off money abroad to other countries, are the real money launderers and that the ACC should take action against them.
The ACC failed to provide the High Court with a report on December 6 last year over whether the Bangladeshi nationals who own properties abroad -- including Canada, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia -- had made the purchases with laundered money due to non-cooperation from government agencies, media reports said.
