The High Court has dropped a writ petition from its cause list after the state informed the court that Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has no current plans to relocate stray dog.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Mohammad Ali passed the order on Monday after hearing from Attorney General AM Amin Uddin on the matter.
The attorney general informed the court that he spoke with the DSCC mayor and confirmed that it has no plans to relocate stray dogs for now.
The DSCC will discuss with the writ petitioners and ministry concerned if any new decision is taken over the matter.
Barrister Mustafizur Rahman Khan accompanied Barrister Saqeb Mahbub to represent the writ petition.
Earlier on September 27, actress Jaya Ahsan and two animal rights bodies — People for Animal Welfare (PAW) Foundation and Obhoyaronno filed the petition.
The plea sought a rule from the High Court asking the government and the Dhaka South City Corporation why the initiative should not be declared illegal.
According to the section 7 of the Animal Welfare Act 219, stray animals cannot be killed or relocated.
However, from the last week of August, DSCC authorities began relocating 30,000 stray dogs from Dhaka.
The DSCC said that the decision to relocate stray dogs came following complaints of untoward incidents.
The move drew criticism and triggered protest from the animal rights activists in the capital.
