HC grants bail to ASP in feticide, torture case

The High Court has granted four weeks interim bail to Nazmus Shakib, an assistant superintendent of police (ASP), in a case filed by his wife on allegations of feticide, torture and demanding dowry.

The High Court bench of Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar issued the order on August 18, the ASP’s lawyer Muhammad Shajadul Islam Bhuiyan said on Sunday.

As per the HC order, Shakib will have to surrender to the trial court after the four weeks have elapsed.

According to media reports, Shakib’s wife Ishrat Rahman filed the case against him with the assistance of Supreme Court lawyer Ishrat Hasan on June 4. She also brought allegations against Shakib’s parents.

The case was filed with Ramna police station.

According to the complaint, Ishrat Rahman was married to Nazmus Shakib, 34, in March 2017.  Since the marriage, Shakib and his parents have repeatedly tortured her in the demand for dowry.

As a result of the torture, Ishrat Rahman was forced to have an abortion in July 2019, the complaint said.

Nazmus Shakib was recently transferred to Kagrachari district. Previously, he worked at the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) headquarters.
