ACC launches probe into corruption allegations against 4 ex-MPs

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an investigation into corruption allegations against four former members of parliament, including former state minister for Primary and Mass Education Zakir Hossain.

The ACC’s preliminary findings indicate that there is initial credibility to the allegations.

The commission made the final decision to proceed with the investigation into the corruption claims on Wednesday.

ACC Deputy Director Akhtarul Islam confirmed Dhaka Tribune.  

The four MPs accused of misusing their power to acquire illegal wealth through corruption are Zakir Hossain, former MP of Kurigram-4; Mohammad Habib Hasan, former MP of Dhaka-18; Advocate Nurul Islam Talukder, former MP of Bogura-3; and Abdul Odud, former MP of Chapainawabganj-3.

According to the commission sources, Zakir Hossain is alleged to own a two-story building and 10 % of land in Roumari, Kurigram, as well as a market and a rice mill on 3.28 acres of land.

Additionally, he has investments in various banks and businesses, with assets total Tk5.18 crore registered in his name.

Mohammad Habib Hasan is reported to have amassed substantial assets worth crores of taka through corruption, with significant holdings in the names of his family members, including luxurious properties in Canada and numerous other illegal assets both domestically and internationally.

According to the ACC, similar corruption evidence has been found against Nurul Islam Talukdar and Abdul Odud.
