The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday arrested a cashier of Sir Salimullah Medical College on charges of embezzling Tk2.5 crore from user fees.
ACC Secretary Mahbub Hossain gave this information to reporters at a press briefing organized by the ACC office.
The official said the arrestee, Abdus Sattar, embezzled Tk2.54 crore from government revenue (user fee) collected for medical services and various tests of patients from August 1 to November 28, instead of depositing it in the government treasury.
He also said an assistant director at the ACC head office, Mahbubul Alam, filed a case on Tuesday with the ACC's integrated district office, Dhaka-1.
The accused has been arrested and sent to court, he added.
According to the report of the incident, the authorities complained to take legal action for embezzling this money. After that, a decision was taken by the commission to file a case and investigate the case.
Abdus Satter used to deposit the money collected for medical services and various tests of government revenue (user fee) to Agrani Bank's Mitford Hospital branch. Later, he used to deposit the entire amount in the Mitford branch of Sonali Bank through treasury challan (receipt).
He used to receive cash from the daily collected user fees from Ali Imam, office assistant-cum-computer cashier of the hospital.
According to the calculation of Zahedur Rahim, accounting officer at the hospital, the amount of user fee collected from August 1 to November 28 is Tk5.13 crore, of which the amount of money deposited in the government treasury through treasury challan is Tk2.54 lakhs.
Out of this, Tk3,84,690 have been returned as the patients did not undergo various tests.
The hospital authorities said in their complaint that on November 28, the bank balance was Tk21.57 . Thus total (Tk2,34,02,898 + Tk3,84,690 + Tk21,57,659) = TK2,59,45,247 amount of deposits is obtained.
Accused Abdus Satter Mia misappropriated TK2.54 crore without depositing it in the bank account of the hospital or in the government treasury.
The hospital authorities also said he confessed to the crime committed at the hospital on November 30.
