Six people have been killed when the roof of an under-construction building of a cement factory, run by Sena Kalyan Sangstha, collapsed in Mongla Port Industrial Area.
Khalishpur Fire Service and Civil Defence Senior Station Officer Tarek Hasan Bhuiyan told the Dhaka Tribune: "The firefighters have recovered six bodies from under the debris so far."
"Earlier in the day, four bodies were sent to the morgue while we have recovered two more bodies in the evening."
At least 58 others have been rescued alive from the collapsed site while several others are feared trapped under the debris.
Of the deceased, four were identified as Amir, Alamin, Baki Billah and Maruf Sheikh.
Medical Officer Dr Prokash of Mongla Port Hospital said fifty-five injured labourers were sent to the hospital.
"Of them, five have been undergoing treatment, some others sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital while the rest left the hospital after primary treatment," he added
Sub Inspector Abu Asad, who was in-charge for monitoring the injured labourers at Khulna Medical College Hospital, said twenty-one injured have been admitted at the hospital so far.
Of them, critically injured Shihab was sent to Dhaka.
Navy, Coast Guard and Fire Service teams are conducting rescue operation at the collapse site.
Deputy General Manager Maksudul Karim of Sena Kalyan Sangstha in Mongla said the rooftop of the three-storied building of Elephant Brand Cement, one of the biggest industrial unit of Sena Kalyan Sangstha, collapsed around 1pm Thursday.
He, however, could not ascertain how many people were trapped inside the building.
When contacted, Deputy Director Sheikh Mizanur Rahman of Khulna Fire Service, who has been leading the rescue team, said: "The death toll may rise further as we are suspecting that 10-12 more bodies are under the debris.
"We have rescued 58 people so far."
Security Guard Khairul Alam said more than 300 labourers were working at the site during the collapse. "Some 60 to 70 workers are feared trapped under the rubbles."
After visiting the spot, Coast Guard Mongla Commander Captain Kazi Mehdi Masud said the roof might have collapsed due to some faults in the roof construction.
