Sub-station to handle doubled electricity imports from India

State-owned Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) will set up the country’s second 500MW back-to-back high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) sub-station at Bheramara in Kushtia to import electricity from India.

It will be set up next to the existing Bheramara HVDC sub-station. Electricity will be added to the national grid via sub-stations at Ishwardi and Khulna.

“We recently invited bids from eligible bidders for Block 2,” PGCB Managing Director Masum-Al-Beruni told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.

He said the completion period for Bheramara Block 2 is 24 months from the effective date of contract.

“Bangladesh has applied for financing from Asian Development Bank (ADB) towards the cost of the project. Bidding is open to companies from eligible ADB member countries,” Al-Beruni said.

India has agreed to export an extra 500MW of electricity on a commercial basis, sourced from the private sector, through its existing grid line between Bahrampur, India and Bheramara, Bangladesh.

The move comes after the 8th Joint Steering Committee meeting between Bangladesh and India on power sector cooperation held in New Delhi on October 10, 2014.
