Noor: Awareness on RTI act to enhance administration efficiency

Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor yesterday said information awareness among the marginal group of people would enhance efficiency and accountability of the administration and consolidate democracy.

“The Right to Information Act ensures every citizen’s right to know,” he said speaking at a discussion meeting on “International Right to Know Day,” organised by the Information Commission at Sufia Kamal auditorium of the National Museum.

Presided over by Chief Information Commissioner Mohammad Faruque, the discussion was also addressed by Information Secretary Martuza Ahmad, Cabinet Division Coordinator and Cultural Cell Secretary-in-Charge M Nazrul Islam, Information Commissioner Prof Khurshida Begum Sayeed.

“It is the responsibility of mass media to reach the RTI act to the people, taking into account the commitment of the government and the obligation of the civil society in this regard,” he added.

“The RTI act is a good law. The people would want to know more information using this law, if they became conscious.”

This will also ensure accountability of the administration, he added. He stressed the need for making the women aware to get more benefit of the RTI act.

Information Secretary Martuza Ahmad said RTI act is a law to establish people’s rights on the state. “This is a law to establish democracy and human rights, ensure accountability and empower the people,” he added.

Earlier, the Information Commission organised a colourful rally marking the International Right to Know Day 2014. The rally started from the TSC at Dhaka University and ended in front of the National Museum.
