Syed Ashraful Islam, general secretary of Awami League, said he was hopeful about the United Nations initiative for holding a election with participation of all political parties.
Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, Assistant Secretary General to the United Nations, expressed the view in a meeting with top Awami League leaders, said Syed Ashraf.
He made the statement after the meeting at Pan-Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the afternoon.
He said: “UN seeks participation of all political parties in the upcoming national elections for the establishment of democracy in Bangladesh.”
Ashraf said: “We have just held a primary discussion with Taranco and will hold two to three more discussions with him.”
He said Taranco will again hold discussions with Awami League after they finish holding a discussion with the main opposition BNP.
“We are hopeful that a fair election will be held in a similar way like the election which was held after Ban Ki-moon’s during 1/11,” he said.
Meanwhile, he urged everyone to cooperate in holding a fair election.
The country had hit a political deadlock on how the next elections will be held.
BNP, the main opposition party, has been demanding to hold the national elections under a non-party caretaker government.
An interim cabinet was formed in November as per ruling Awami League president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s proposal for an ‘all-party’ cabinet to oversee the upcoming polls.
Taranco's visit has created hope among the people that the political crisis may be resolved. His visit is aimed at encouraging ‘dialogue and conditions’ conducive to parliamentary elections scheduled for January 5.
