As part of Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre’s ongoing film retrospective paying tribute to recently demised Indian filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh, his famous film “Titli” will be screened Friday at 6:30pm at IGCC, Gulshan.
The 2002 Bangla film, starring Konkona Sen Sharma, Aparna Sen and Mithun Chakraborty, tells a story of an adolescent girl, played by Konkona, the sensitivity and fragile state of affairs of a teenager’s life. It also portrays the mother-daughter relationship and quiet understanding within the pair.
Titli is a 17-year-old girl, who has a teenage crush on a Bollywood superstar Rohit Roy (Mithun Chakraborty), who is more than twice her age. Though her bedroom is filled with his posters and memorabilia, Titli’s mother Urmila is surprised to learn that her daughter was infatuated with Rohit to such an extent that she could even marry this much older man.
In an occasion when Titli and Urmila were travelling to Siliguri, they happen to share their jeep with Rohit Roy himself, who has a flight to catch from Siliguri. Titli’s adolescent dreams are set on fire after she meets her crush face to face. But soon she is shocked when faced with the fact that twenty years ago, Urmila and Rohit were lovers.
