JS body for bringing expats under insurance coverage

The parliamentary standing committee on Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment has recommended that the Bangladeshi expatriate workers should be brought under insurance coverage.

The parliamentary body came up with the recommendation during a meeting at the Parliament building on Thursday.

Emerging from the meeting, Mahjabin Morshed, a member of the committee, told the Dhaka Tribune: “We have come up with with the recommendation considering the helpless condition of the family members of the expatriate workers, who were crippled or were killed in accidents while working on abroad.

“If they were brought under insurance, they would not have suffered so much.”

Welcoming the initiative of the JS body, Welfare Association of Repatriated Bangladeshi Employees (Warbe) Chairman Saiful Huq said: “This is a very positive step. We have been talking over the issue for a long time and we hope that the ministry will take quick step in order to implement it.

“Philippines, Mexico and India have taken such scheme for their expatriate workers and recently Nepal also brought its labourers under insurance coverage.”

Mahjabin further said the committee also recommended initiative to legalise the illegal Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia.

According to a press release, the committee has discussed the manpower export issue with Malaysia through the G2G process.

The meeting also recommend that proper security of women workers should be ensured before sending them abroad.
