3 Ctg JMB men put on 5-day remand

A Chittagong court has remanded each of the three Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) members, who were arrested in possession of firearms on Sunday, for five days.

Naimur Rahman alias Noyon, Md Shawkat Rasel and Faisal Mahmud were put on remand for questioning in a case filed under the Anti-terrorism Act in connection with the recovery of firearms and bombs from the port city’s Khowajnagar area under Karnaphuli police station on October 6.

Assistant Commissioner (prosecution) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police Nirmalendu Bikash Chawakrabarty told the Dhaka Tribune the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Rahmat Ali Monday gave the remand order after police produced the trio before the court with a 10-day remand petition in the case. “After hearing the remand petition, the court granted five days' remand for each of the accused.”

The three JMB members were arrested in different areas of the port city by the Detective Branch (DB) members on Sunday. They all study physics at Chittagong University.

After arresting the three, DB officials raided a JMB den in Aman Bazar area and recovered American semiautomatic MK 11 sniper rifle along with 250 rounds, two magazines, 10 detonators, 12 sets of Bangladesh Army uniforms, and some books and other documents.

DB’s Additional Deputy Commissioner Babul Akhtar said Fardin alias Noman, chief of JMB in Chittagong, rented the den five to six months ago, identifying himself as a businessman named Nafis.

During Sunday's raid, DB officials could not detain Fardin as he fled earlier sensing police presence.

Following the recovery of arms, two cases accusing Fardin and the three others were filed with Hathazari police station under the Arms Act and Explosive Act.

Hathazari police station Officer-in-Charge Md Ismail told the Dhaka Tribune police sought ten days' remand for each of the three JMB members in both cases but hearings had not been held yet.
