Modi to visit Dhaka June 6

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay a two-day official visit to Bangladesh on June 6 at the invitation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs made the disclosure in a press release issued on Tuesday afternoon.

This will be Modi’s first visit to Bangladesh.

During the visit, the two prime ministers will have official talks where the entire gamut of bilateral relations will be discussed, said the release.

The Indian prime minister will also pay a courtesy call on President Abdul Hamid, it added.

During Modi's visit, India and Bangladesh will scale up security, defence and connectivity ties and likely seal the Teesta water-sharing pact, according to a report recently published by Indian daily Hindustan Times (HT).

"The Centre, in renewed efforts to get the support of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee for a tweaked Teesta river watersharing formula, has also offered financial assistance for irrigation projects in the state, which goes to the polls in 2016," read the HT report.

On May 7, India's Lok Sabha passed a constitutional amendment bill to operationalise the Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) with Bangladesh, and the exchange of certain enclaves of land between the two countries.

Soon after the Indian Parliament passed the constitutional amendment bill, Modi, during a telephone conversation with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said: “I will come with good news.”
