The Bangladesh Coast Guard has renamed 5 of its ships, dropping the name Joy Bangla and those of 4 national leaders, following approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Under the approved changes, BCGS Joy Bangla has been renamed BCGS Adommo Bangla. The 4 vessels previously named after national leaders have also been given new names.
The 4 other vessels have been renamed as follows: BCGS Syed Nazrul to BCGS Firoz Kabir, BCGS Tajuddin to BCGS Nurul Islam, BCGS Mansur Ali to BCGS M Humayun Kabir, and BCGS Kamruzzaman to BCGS Ashraf Siddiqui.
A letter conveying the approval was sent to the director general of the Bangladesh Coast Guard by the ministry’s Border-3 Branch last Thursday.
According to the letter, the ministry approved the renaming following a proposal submitted by the Bangladesh Coast Guard.
The letter stated that the changes had received approval from the appropriate authority. It was signed by Masfika Hossain, senior assistant secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
However, the letter did not specify the reasons for the renaming or the basis for selecting the new names.
