PM Tarique: Economic self-reliance key to Bangladesh's development

Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman on Saturday said Bangladesh cannot achieve sustainable development unless its people become economically self-reliant.

Speaking at the inauguration of the re-excavation work of the Patlikhal Canal in Cox's Bazar, Tarique highlighted several government initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods and strengthening economic empowerment.

He announced that the government would distribute 10,000 Krishak Cards (farmers' cards) in every upazila across the country. He said the distribution of Krishak Cards and Family Cards reflects the government's efforts to expand social support and strengthen economic security at the grassroots level.

Referring to the proposed national budget, the prime minister said taxes on seven essential commodities had been withdrawn to help reduce the cost of living. He also criticized opposition parties for opposing measures intended to ease financial pressure on ordinary people.

Tarique Rahman said the government views the people as the rightful owners of the country and is working to improve living standards.

He urged citizens not to be influenced by misinformation and reiterated the government's commitment to public welfare and economic development.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee, and senior government and administrative officials were present at the event.

The visit marks Tarique Rahman's first official trip to Cox's Bazar since assuming office as prime minister. He arrived at Cox's Bazar Airport at 9:55am and was received by senior officials, local representatives, and political leaders.

According to his itinerary, Tarique addressed a roadside public gathering after inaugurating the canal project. He is also scheduled to visit Dulahazara Safari Park and participate in a tree-planting program in the Malumghat Reserved Forest.

Later in the day, he will travel to Pekua to pay respects at the grave of Wasim Akram, who is recognized as the first martyr from Chittagong during the July Movement, and meet members of his family. He is also expected to lay the foundation stones for Pekua Municipality and Matamuhuri Upazila.

In the afternoon, the prime minister is scheduled to address a public rally organized by the BNP in the Chakaria Bus Terminal area. He will later inspect the Marine Drive Road and adjacent beach areas.

The final event of the visit will be a civic reception at Hotel Long Beach. He is expected to return to Dhaka by air at around 10pm after completing the day's programs.

Security has been tightened across Cox's Bazar in connection with the prime minister's visit.
