Masud Uddin Chowdhury shown arrested over crimes against humanity in July Uprising case

The International Crimes Tribunal has formally shown the arrest of retired Lieutenant General Masud Uddin Chowdhury in connection with a case involving alleged crimes against humanity during the July uprising in Feni.

A three-member bench of International Crimes Tribunal-2, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury passed the order on Thursday. Other members of the bench were Justice Manjurul Bashid and Justice Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.

The tribunal approved the request to show Masud Uddin Chowdhury as arrested in the case and granted permission for his one-day interrogation.

Prosecutor Mizanul Islam had sought both the arrest status order and custodial interrogation, along with additional time to submit the investigation report.

After hearing the arguments, the tribunal allowed the prosecution’s prayer and fixed July 21 as the deadline for submitting the investigation report.

Masud Uddin Chowdhury was arrested on March 23 from the Baridhara DOHS area in Dhaka. The following day, a Dhaka court granted a five-day remand in a case alleging the embezzlement of Tk 24,000 crore through a syndicate and human trafficking.

He was later placed on a six-day remand on March 29 and a further three-day remand on April 4.

Subsequently, on April 7, he was shown arrested in connection with a separate murder case filed over the killing of Delwar Hossain during the July Uprising in Mirpur. On April 11, he was again placed on a four-day remand in police custody.

Masud Uddin was admitted to hospital on April 12 after falling ill during police custody interrogation. Following his treatment, he was produced before the court on April 27.

Police then sought a fresh seven-day remand for further interrogation, citing three grounds. The court, however, granted a three-day remand.

Subsequently, on April 30, the court further extended his remand by four days.
