46,000 vehicles cross Jamuna Bridge in 24hrs; toll collection exceeds Tk3.41 crore

Traffic pressure has increased on the Dhaka–Tangail–Jamuna Bridge highway as people return to the capital after the Eid holidays, with more than 46,000 vehicles crossing the Bangabandhu Bridge in the past 24 hours.

According to the bridge authorities, a total of 46,278 vehicles crossed the bridge between Thursday midnight and Friday midnight, generating toll revenue of Tk3.41 crore.

Of the total vehicles, 16,222 were heading towards North Bengal, contributing Tk1.43 crore in tolls. Meanwhile, 30,056 vehicles travelling towards Dhaka generated Tk1.98 crore.

In comparison, 37,110 vehicles crossed the bridge on March 26, with toll collection amounting to Tk2.98 crore—indicating an increase of 9,168 vehicles over the latest 24-hour period.

Officials’ remarks

Syed Riaz Uddin, executive engineer at the Jamuna Bridge site office, said the pressure of returning passengers has risen significantly after Eid.

“Vehicles are currently crossing through 18 toll booths—nine on each side of the bridge. Motorcycles are using two dedicated booths on either side. We are trying to keep toll booths operational round the clock to manage the pressure,” he said.

Toll collection on the bridge began after its inauguration in 1998. Previously, the Commuter System Network (CNS) managed toll operations. Since late 2012, toll collection has been handled by China Road and Bridge Corporation.
