At least 11 people were killed and 25 others injured in separate road accidents and a floating bridge overturn incident across six districts from Saturday morning to afternoon, as Eid holiday travel intensified across the country.
Jamalpur
In the most tragic incident, four people were killed when a floating bridge over the Brahmaputra river in Dewanganj upazila of Jamalpur District capsized under the weight of holidaymakers around 3:30 pm near Dewanganj Model Police Station.
The deceased were identified as Khadija (12), Abdul Motaleb (6), Mayamoni (10), and Abir Hossain (16), all were the residents of nearby villages in the upazila.
According to the Fire Service, five people were pulled from the water during rescue operations; four were found dead and one injured was hospitalized.
Mymensingh
Two people were killed and four others injured in a collision between a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a motorcycle in Tarakanda upazila of Mymensingh around 1:00 pm at Shimulia Bhandari Mor on the Shyamganj–Mymensingh road.
The deceased were identified as motorcycle rider Rubel Mia (26) from Netrokona’s Purbadhala upazila and Ridi Akter (8), a passenger of the auto-rickshaw. The injured were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Police said the vehicles were seized and traffic later returned to normal.
Other districts report additional fatalities
Elsewhere, road accidents claimed lives in Chittagong, Narail, Chuadanga and Gopalganj accelerating to the rising toll during the Eid holiday travel period.
Authorities say most incidents occurred due to overcrowding, reckless driving, and unsafe transport conditions as thousands of people traveled to their hometowns for Eid celebrations.
Chittagong
One unidentified man, aged around 35 was killed and at least 18 others injured when a passenger bus overturned in the Patia upazila of the Chittagong –Cox’s Bazar bypass highway around 12:30 pm.
Police said a bus of Hanif Paribahan traveling from Chittagong to Cox’s Bazar lost control while attempting to avoid a pedestrian, struck a road divider, and overturned at Bhatikhain.
Patia Crossing Highway Police Sub-Inspector Mostafizur Rahman said, the injured were rescued and taken to Patia Upazila Health Complex. Four critically injured passengers were later shifted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. Police recovered the bus and restored traffic on the highway.
In a separate incident on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway in Mirsarai’s Wahedpur Union early Saturday, businessman Enamul Haque Aiyub (45) was killed when his private car lost control and crashed into a roadside tree.
He was the owner of several business establishments, including Arnab Corporation. Police said he was travelling home when the accident occurred.
Officials of Kumira Highway Police confirmed that legal procedures were completed and the body was handed over to the family.
Narail
A motorcyclist, Rabbi Molla (20), died and another passenger was critically injured after their motorcycle lost control in the Dhonda Kajipara Mosque area on the Magura–Narail regional highway around 3:00 pm.
Narail Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Oli Mia said both riders fell onto the road after losing control of the motorcycle. The injured passenger is undergoing treatment, and legal procedures are underway.
Chuadanga
One youth was killed and another injured when a motorcycle crashed into a roadside tree in the Ghormara area on the Chuadanga–Kushtia highway around noon.
The deceased, Suruj Ali (19), was declared dead on arrival at Chuadanga Sadar Hospital. The injured, Hridoy Hossain (18), is receiving treatment.
Police said the accident occurred after the motorcycle lost control while travelling on the highway.
Gopalganj
A power utility worker, Shariful Islam (30), died after losing control of his motorcycle in the Baikunthapur area on the Rajair–Kotalipara road while returning home from work.
He was an employee of the West Zone Power Distribution Company Limited. Family members said he was returning home ahead of Eid when the accident occurred, possibly due to a slippery road caused by light rain.
Kotalipara Police Sub-Inspector Sukumar Kundu confirmed the incident, adding that no formal complaint had been filed.
