Eid holiday begins Tuesday

Monday is the last working day before the holiday for Eid al-Fitr.

A seven-day holiday for the festival will begin on Tuesday. The Eid celebration in Bangladesh is expected to fall on March 20 or 21, depending on the sighting of the moon.

Tuesday has already been declared a public holiday for Laylat al-Qadr (Shab-e-Qadr).

Earlier, a five-day Eid holiday from March 19 to March 23 had been scheduled. However, there was a working day in between on Wednesday, March 18.

To ease travel for people returning to their hometowns ahead of Eid, the government approved a proposal to declare March 18 a holiday at a cabinet meeting. Following the decision, the Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification on March 8 declaring the day a public holiday by executive order.

According to the official holiday calendar, March 21 is the general holiday for Eid.

With the additional executive order, government employees will now enjoy a continuous seven-day break from March 17 to March 23.

Government offices, courts, banks, insurance companies and other public, private and autonomous institutions are scheduled to reopen on March 24.

Employees will work on March 25 before another public holiday on March 26 for Independence Day.

This will be followed by the weekly weekend on March 27 and 28. Regular office activities will resume on March 29.

Employees who manage to take leave on March 24 and 25 will effectively enjoy a 12-day break from March 17 to March 28.
