Youth killed in gunfire at Shaheed Minar

A public shooting near the Shaheed Minar area in the capital has claimed the life of a young video content creator, Rakib Ahmed.

The incident occurred around 9:30pm on Sunday, and his death was confirmed at around 10pm.

Sub-Inspector Md Mithu Fakir of Shahbagh Police Station reported that Rakib was hanging out with friends at the Central Shaheed Minar at night when 3–4 individuals attacked him, inflicting multiple random stab wounds and a gunshot wound to the head.

Upon receiving the news, he was rescued and rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment. He passed away at approximately 10:30pm while undergoing medical care.

The Sub-Inspector also confirmed that one person has been detained in connection with the incident.

Bystanders managed to apprehend one of the suspects and handed him over to the University of Dhaka’s Proctorial Team, who later transferred him to the police.

Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed confirmed that members of the proctorial team responded to the scene and handed the detained individual over to the police, adding that Shahbagh Police Station is now handling the case.

“We are looking into what happened there. No one from Dhaka University is involved. Both the shooter and the victim are outsiders. Police have taken one person into custody,” he said.

The victim, Rakib, was reportedly a video content creator. His friend GM Ishan, who brought him to the hospital, said a group of friends had been hanging out near the Shaheed Minar when they suddenly heard gunshots. When they rushed over, they found Rakib lying on the ground, covered in blood, and immediately took him to the hospital.

Al-Amin, a friend of the victim, stated that while they were chatting at the Shaheed Minar, a group of 3–4 youths suddenly attacked Rakib with knives and firearms before fleeing the scene.

Another friend, Md Roni, said Rakib had been having tea with a few female friends at a stall near the Shaheed Minar when someone called him away. Shortly afterward, they heard gunshots and found him collapsed with a gunshot wound to the head and multiple stab wounds across his body. Those present chased the suspect and managed to detain one person, who is now in Shahbagh Police Station custody.

Rakib’s ancestral home is in Choumuhani village, Bhola Sadar. His father, Tariqul Islam Khokon, is a staff member at Dhaka University's Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall. The family currently resides on Nazimuddin Road in Nimtoli.
