DMP Commissioner: Mobile court to prevent overcharging, harassment during Eid travel

Ahead of the holy festival of Eid-ul-Fitr, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has taken several measures to ensure a safe and smooth journey for homebound passengers.

Mobile courts will be deployed to prevent fare overcharging and passenger harassment during the Eid travel rush, said DMP Commissioner (Acting) Md Sarwar.

He made the remarks at a briefing held at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road in the capital on Sunday morning.

The DMP commissioner said that sufficient police personnel have already been deployed to ensure a safe Eid journey. Security measures have been strengthened at key locations, including the capital’s four major bus terminals, while detectives will also monitor the terminals.

He added that strict action will be taken against unfit buses, excessive fare collection and passenger harassment. Necessary instructions have already been given to transport owners and workers in this regard.

According to him, help desks will be set up at bus terminals for the convenience of passengers, and fare charts along with bus schedules must be displayed. Immediate action will be taken if any complaint is received regarding overcharging, ticket black marketing or harassment of passengers.

As the capital tends to become relatively empty during the Eid holidays, special security measures have also been taken across the city. Police patrols and checkpoints will be increased on important roads and areas, and residential neighbourhoods will remain under special surveillance.

During the briefing, Md Sarwar also offered safety advice to city residents. He urged people to ensure that doors and windows are properly locked before leaving home, keep sufficient lighting inside houses, and store important documents in secure places.

Passengers and pedestrians were also advised to keep their cash safe and remain cautious while travelling so that the joy of Eid for city dwellers remains uninterrupted.
