The Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges has formed a five-member committee to investigate the death of a pedestrian caused by a falling metro rail bearing pad in Dhaka’s Farmgate area on Sunday afternoon.
The committee is headed by Mohammad Abdur Rouf, secretary of the Bridge Division under the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges. To ensure a thorough technical and engineering review, experts from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) and the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) have been included.
Other members of the committee are Dr ABM Toufique Hasan, professor of Mechanical Engineering at Buet; Lt Col Md Jahidul Islam, associate professor of Civil Engineering at MIST; and Brig Gen (Retd) Mohammad Abdul Wahab, project director of DMTCL’s Line-5. Deputy Secretary Asfia Sultana will serve as the member-secretary.
The committee will also review the report of the previous accident that occurred on September 18, 2025. In addition to identifying those responsible, it will prepare recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The committee has been instructed to submit its report to the ministry within two weeks.
Soon after the incident, Adviser to the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser on Defence and National Solidarity Development Lt Gen (Retd) Abdul Hafiz, and senior officials from the ministry and DMTCL visited the site.
Earlier, around 12:15pm on Sunday, a bearing pad from the metro rail fell near the Bangladesh Agricultural Scientists’ Institute adjacent to Farmgate Metro Station, killing a young man named Abul Kalam.
The deceased was from Isharpati village in Naria upazila of Shariatpur district.
Alongside the probe, the government expressed deep condolences to the victim’s family and announced an immediate financial assistance of Tk500,000. The government will also bear all funeral expenses.
