Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on Saturday conducted a targeted cleanliness and mosquito eradication campaign across three major educational and healthcare institutions—Dhaka University (DU), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), and Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
The initiative, part of a broader public health and sanitation program, also included an eviction drive from Ananda Bazar intersection to the Central Shaheed Minar, aimed at removing illegal structures and vendors from footpaths adjacent to DMCH.
The operation was led by DSCC Administrator Md Shahzahan Mia and attended by Local Government Division Secretary Md Rezaul Maksud Zahedi and Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmad Khan, who joined as special guests.
Beginning at 6am, the drive mobilized over 1,300 personnel from DSCC’s Waste Management and Health Departments, alongside members of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) and campus cleaning staff.
Activities included clearing drains, sewers, and footpaths, removing accumulated waste, and applying mosquito control agents. A public awareness rally was also held to engage students and residents.
Speaking during the campaign, Secretary Zahedi emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration to maintain campus hygiene.
“Starting today, we will work together continuously to evict outsiders and illegal structures to keep our campuses as clean as those in the developed world,” he said, urging media support to drive behavioral change in dengue prevention and waste management.
DSCC Administrator Shahzahan Mia reiterated the Corporation’s commitment to coordinated action with campus authorities.
“We are working together to ensure clean and safe environments at three of the country’s leading centers of learning—DU, BUET, and DMCH,” he said.
He also clarified that the actual number of dengue cases within DSCC’s jurisdiction is lower than reported figures, as patients from across the country seek treatment at hospitals located in the area.
Addressing the issue of illegal businesses around DMCH, Shahzahan Mia stated that profiteers will no longer be allowed to operate in front of the hospital.
“To ensure a healthy environment and reduce traffic congestion, DSCC and hospital authorities will work jointly with the public,” he added.
