3, including Haji Selim, arrested in new case

A Dhaka court has shown that former MP Haji Salim and banned Dhaka University Chhatra League General Secretary Tanvir Hasan Saikat were arrested in a case filed over the killing of electrician Shawon Sikder during the July Uprising in the capital’s Lalbagh.

In a separate case over attempted murder in New Market, the court also showed former Chhatra League education affairs secretary Mukib Mia was arrested.

The order came on Wednesday from Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Istiyaq after hearing the petitions filed by the investigating officers. The court granted the petitions after the three accused were produced before it.

According to the case statement, Shawon Sikder was returning home through Azimpur under Lalbagh police station on July 19 last year during the July Uprising. When he reached in front of Eden Mohila College, he was shot by the accused and later declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. A case was filed at Lalbagh police station on January 21 in connection with the killing.

In the attempted murder case, the accused allegedly opened fire on a peaceful anti-discrimination student rally near Gate 2 of New Market on August 2. Victim and case complainant Habibur Rahman, along with Dhaka College students Md Majedul Islam, Mehedi Hasan, Mahbub, Nahid, Russell, Miraj, Eden College’s Sammi Akter, City College’s Hafiza Akter, and Jannatul Ferdous Naeema, were injured in the incident.

The case was filed at the New Market police station on August 26. In this case, Shahid is listed as accused No 29.
