Maulana Saad follower dies following clash at Tongi Ijtema ground

A follower of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi faction of Tablighi Jamaat, who was injured in a clash between the two factions at Tongi Ijtema ground, passed away while undergoing treatment.  

Mizanur Rahman, 42, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at around 3:30am on Tuesday.

He was a leader of the Saad faction in the Fulbari area.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Ashraf Ali of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Shahbagh Police Station confirmed the matter.

Mizanur Rahman, a resident of Chandthana village in Fulbari upazila of Kurigram district, was the son of a freedom fighter, Shobir Uddin Pramanik.

He was a stationery shop owner and the father of one son and two daughters.

According to his brother-in-law Mosaddekul Haque, Mizanur Rahman was an active member of the Saad faction of Tablighi Jamaat and the local leader in Fulbari.

He came to the Tongi Ijtema ground to attend the five-day congregation organized by the Saad faction.

He was injured during a clash between the two factions at the Ijtema ground on December 18 last year around 3am.

Later, his fellow members rescued him and admitted him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

He was severely injured in an attack reportedly by Maulana Jubair faction.

However, it was not confirmed to which group he belonged.

Saad faction media coordinator Sayeem said: "We were at the Ijtema ground, and while we were asleep, an attack was launched on us. Mizanur Rahman was critically injured in the attack by the Jubair faction. He was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for one month and 12 days before passing away."
