The interim government has "strongly condemned" the defamation of Freedom Fighter Abdul Hai Kanu at Chauddagram on Sunday.
"The police and local administration have been asked to launch an investigation into the incident and bring the perpetrators to book," Chief Adviser's Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder said in a statement on Monday.
Local police have said Hai is an accused in nine cases, including murder, Azad said.
"We ask all to refrain from taking the law into their own hands," he said.
Freedom fighter Abdul Hai was assaulted by locals in front of Kuliara Primary School in Chauddagram, Comilla, on Sunday afternoon.
The attackers also put a garland of shoes around his neck.
A video of the incident, lasting 1 minute and 46 seconds, surfaced on Facebook later that night and went viral.
Confirming the incident, Chauddagram police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) ATM Aktaruzzaman told Dhaka Tribune the freedom fighter was indeed attacked.
Kanu, a member of the central committee of Krishak League, was seen in the video surrounded by 10-12 people who threatened him and demanded he leave the area.
The attack was reportedly led by local expatriate Abul Hashem, alleged to be a Jamaat supporter, and a youth named Ahid.
Sources suggest that Kanu had been involved in Awami League politics but supported Mizan, an opponent of former railway minister Mujibul Haque. As a result, he had been absent from the area for several years due to the political influence of the former MP. However, upon his recent return, tensions escalated, leading to the attack.
