Followers of Maulana Jubayer have been accused of vandalizing a private car and blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway over a dispute concerning access to the Ijtema grounds In Gazipur's Tongi.
The blockade, lasting about half an hour, caused significant traffic congestion.
Protesters attacked a private car during the incident, shattering its front glass and injuring two passengers.
The incident took place around noon on Thursday, when over 500 followers of Maulana Jubayer gathered in the Mannu Gate area of the highway.
Two organizers from the opposing faction of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, Maulana Basir and Maulana Ataur, were injured in the conflict and were taken to Uttara Adhunik Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Police later intervened, convincing the protesters to clear the highway and return to the Ijtema grounds.
Supporters of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi claimed the dispute arose after they sought permission to hold the second phase of the Jor Ijtema from December 20 to 24, which was denied by the authorities.
Locals reported that Saad's top organizers attempted to access the western part of the Ijtema grounds but were stopped by Jubayer's followers.
The conflict escalated when Jubayer’s supporters, armed with sticks, attacked a private car carrying Saad’s followers at Mannu Gate.
Jubayer's faction accused Saad's supporters of attempting to enter the foreign guest accommodations at the Ijtema grounds illegally, while Saad’s group claimed they were only trying to meet with Gazipur Metropolitan Police officials to seek approval for their event.
Police confirmed that Jubayer’s followers blocked the highway, demanding justice for a 2018 attack on their faction by Saad’s supporters.
