Election Commission to reactivate NID cards with 'madness' status

The Election Commission has initiated steps to reactivate national identity cards (NIDs) with a "madness" status ("unsound mind" or "mentally unstable") currently stored in its server.

A directive, signed by Aminul Islam, an assistant programmer in the EC's NID division, was sent to the field administration on Sunday.

The EC has requested a list from the relevant officials for this purpose.

The directive states that there are currently a number of national identity cards in the database marked with the "madness" status.

This status was incorrectly assigned during voter registration when individuals were mistakenly categorized as having a disability or being incapacitated, resulting in their status being marked as "madness." Consequently, citizens holding these identity cards are being deprived of all forms of civic services.

By searching the Card Management System software using the "madness" status, a list of voters can be obtained by upazilas.

The directive requests that a letter be sent to the Director General of the National Identity Registration Wing for the reactivation of the necessary national identity cards from this list.
