Ministry forms 12-member panel for health sector reforms

The Health Ministry has formed a 12-member expert panel to carry out necessary reforms in Bangladesh's health system.

The expert panel has been formed to propose necessary reforms, improve the quality of medical services, and strengthen the structure of the health system. 

Pof M Abul Faiz, former director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), has been made chairman of the committee. Prof Abdullah Al Safi Majumder, the former director of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), is the committee's member secretary.

This information was given in Tuesday's letter from the Government Health Management Department.

The other members of the expert committee include Prof Dr AK Azad Khan, president of the Bangladesh Diabetic Association; Prof Dr Md Sayedur Rahman, vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU); Prof Dr Mahmudur Rahman, former director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR); senior obstetrician and gynaecologist specialist Prof Dr Ferdousi Begum; and former Prof Dr Firoz Kader from Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.

The committee includes members such as Prof Dr Saniya Tahmina, former additional director general (Planning and Development) of the Directorate of Health Services;  Prof Dr Shakil Ahmed from Dhaka Community Medical College Hospital; Prof Dr Fazlur Rahman, CEO of the Center for Injury Prevention and Research; Prof Dr MA Jalil Chowdhury, former head of the Department of Medicine at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University; Prof Dr Sarkar Mahbub Ahmed Shamim from MH Samorita Medical College.

The expert panel is tasked with advising on policy-making for necessary topic-based reforms of the existing health system, ensuring recognition of medical education at all levels to international standards and modernization of higher education.
