FFWC: Floodwaters recede, 5 rivers still above danger level

The flood situation has shown signs of improvement as water levels in some rivers across the country have begun to recede. However, water at seven points of five rivers — Teesta, Surma, Kushiara, Old Surma, and Someshwari — remains above the danger level.

Officials reported that the decreasing water levels in the main rivers of the northeastern region might improve the flood situation in the lower areas of these districts.

According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, the Brahmaputra River's water level has started to recede and is expected to continue decreasing for the next 24 hours. However, the water level in the Jamuna River is rising and may remain stable over the next 24 hours. Similarly, water levels in the Ganges-Padma rivers are increasing and may continue to do so for the next 72 hours.

Meanwhile, the water levels in the primary rivers of the northeastern part of the country are decreasing and are expected to continue falling over the next 72 hours. This trend may lead to an overall improvement in the flood situation in various northeastern districts over the coming days.

Meteorological agencies forecast light to moderate rainfall in the northern and adjacent upland regions over the next 24 hours, with moderate to heavy rainfall expected in the next 48 to 72 hours. Consequently, while the water levels of the Dudhkumar, Teesta, and Dharla rivers in the northern part of the country may decrease in the next 24 hours, they could rise again in the following 48 to 72 hours.

The Meteorological Department recorded the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours at 54mm in Netrakona. Other notable measurements include 30mm in Lakshmipur, 28mm in Khagrachari, 24mm in Bandarban, 21mm in Kushtia, 20mm in Noakhali, 18mm in Magura, 15mm in Feni, 12mm in Madaripur, 9mm in Natore, 8mm in Chittagong, and 7mm in Cox's Bazar and Habiganj. Additionally, Rangamati received 4mm, Joypurhat and Gopalganj 3mm, and Sylhet, Jhenaidah, Srimangal, and Kurigram 2mm each, while Jessore, Dhaka, and Comilla recorded light rainfall.
