Awami League to EU delegation: Voter turnout to be satisfactory despite intimidation

The Awami League assured the visiting European Union delegation on Tuesday that the voter turnout in the upcoming national election would be satisfactory despite intimidation.

"Voter turnout will be satisfactory as there is evident enthusiasm among the people. There is no reason to worry about the turnout," said Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader during a press briefing after the meeting.

Quader emphasized that holding elections every five years is a constitutional obligation, and the transition of power to the elected government is a fundamental part of the democratic process.

He conveyed this information to the EU team, highlighting the constitutional obligation of the election in the context of Bangladesh's reality, with 27 parties and 1,896 candidates participating.

The EU representatives, according to Quader, were more interested in listening than discussing their role in the election.

He mentioned that the EU team did not provide comments, and the discussion primarily focused on the upcoming election in Bangladesh.

Regarding the dismissal of Awami League officials and the suspension of their membership for campaigning for an independent candidate, Quader explained that anyone in the party has the right to campaign for an independent candidate, and this right is respected.

He expressed the party's commitment to showcasing such democratic practices globally.

Quader affirmed his confidence in the satisfactory voter turnout and mentioned that the EU delegates were briefed about concerns regarding BNP's use of violence in response to peaceful elections.

He also noted that the EU's primary concerns lay elsewhere, such as Ukraine, Gaza-Israel-Palestine, and powerful nations were more preoccupied with these issues.
