The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has unveiled a trend in the dengue outbreak, indicating that although men account for a greater infection rate, the number of deaths from dengue is higher among women.
DGHS Director (MIS) Dr Md Shahadat Hossain disclosed the information during a virtual briefing organized by the DGHS on Sunday to provide insights into the current dengue situation in the country.
The infection rate among men stands at 62.4%, while for women, it is 37.6%. However, the mortality rate is notably elevated among women.
Over the past week, a total of 59 individuals succumbed to dengue. Breaking down the data for the week, 33 male individuals and 46 female individuals lost their lives to the disease.
Dr Shahadat said this disparity underscores the necessity for women to exercise increased caution in dealing with dengue.
He also reported that the infection rate is showing signs of decline in Dhaka as the country enters its 33rd week of dengue outbreak this year. Consequently, patient numbers are decreasing in hospitals across the nation, including the capital.
Dr Shahadat Hossain further stated that, during the 29th and 30th weeks, two city corporations of Dhaka reported the highest number of dengue cases. Subsequently, dengue cases began declining in Dhaka. However, weeks 31-32 witnessed the highest incidence of infections outside the capital.
Regarding hospital capacity, Dhaka has over 2,600 dedicated beds for dengue patients. Presently, only 1,974 patients are admitted in the capital, indicating that more than 600 beds for dengue patients remain unoccupied in various government hospitals.
Dr Shahadat also pointed out that Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) currently providing treatment to the highest number of dengue patients, with 315 individuals being treated there. Following closely are Mugda Medical College Hospital and Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital.
