20 years of MV Nasrin launch capsize: BLAST demands compensation for victims

Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST), a non-governmental organization, called for compensation to be provided to the victims of the MV Nasrin-1 launch capsize.

The incident occurred 20 years ago on this day, and BLAST emphasized the importance of addressing the long-standing issue, said a press release issued on Saturday.

BLAST said on July 8, 2003, a total of 110 people died and about 200 went missing and many others were injured after MV Nasrin-1, a triple-deck ferry, sank in the Meghna River.

The organization in 2008 filed a public interest case over the incident, where a lower court ordered compensation to be paid to the affected people, reads the press release.

On June 5, 2017, the High Court upheld the ruling of the lower court in the much-discussed launch accident.

Hence, BLAST demands the implementation of the court's order for compensation amounting to Tk17 crore in the case filed in the lower court.

BLAST further adds that a review of all the recent and old accidents in waterways shows that various sections of the Inland Shipping Ordinance, 1976 are being violated by vessel owners, operators, and supervisory authorities.
