Educational institutions whose classroom activities had remained suspended due to a heatwave reopened on Sunday with the weather becoming somewhat bearable due to rainfall the last couple of days.
All classes at primary and secondary schools as well as ebtedayee madrasas will take place as usual starting Sunday.
Meanwhile, the government issued several guidelines for schools and colleges aimed at mitigating health risks for students:
- Daily assemblies will remain suspended until further notice.
- Students will refrain from other activities including playing outdoors at their educational institutions.
- Students should be advised to drink plenty of water. They will bring water from their homes if necessary.
- Arrangements should be made to keep all windows and doors of institutions fully open to ensure adequate natural light and ventilation in classrooms.
- Necessary arrangements should be made to keep electric fans operational in classrooms, teachers' lounges and staff rooms.
The government on June 4 decided to shut down all primary schools across Bangladesh from June 5 to June 8 due to the severe heatwave.
The following day, ebtedayee madrasas were declared closed from Tuesday to Thursday.
Following the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education and the Directorate of Madrasa Education, the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education also announced the cessation of classroom activities on Thursday.
With Friday and Saturday being the weekends, schools reopened on Sunday after nearly a week.
The closure was prompted after numerous students across the country fell ill and were hospitalized due to the extreme heat, tragically resulting in the death of a sixth-grade student from heatstroke.
