6 councillors deny signing reinstatement petition of Gazipur mayor

Of the 62 councillors who signed the petition to the minister of local government for the reinstatement of suspended mayor Jahangir Alam of Gazipur City Corporation, six councillors have admitted that they have not signed the petition.

A letter signed by those councillors was submitted to the local government minister at the secretariat on Sunday.

It is mentioned in the letter that the councillors have appealed to the minister of local government to ensure the development of Gazipur and victory in the next elections.

A total of 62 councillors have appealed to the minister of local government for the reinstatement of suspended mayor Jahangir Alam of Gazipur City Corporation. After the news regarding the letter was published online by some media, six of the councillors denied to journalists that they had signed the letter.

Some of them also said that they did not know anything about the petition. When asked about the signatures on the application, the councillors disagreed about their signatures being there. Some of them refused to sign and one was staying outside the country. Some commented that someone else could have given their signatures.

Gazipur City Corporation has a total of 76 elected councillors, including 58 councillors and 19 reserved councillors in 58 wards. Among them, one of the councillors is performing duties as acting mayor.

In September 2021, an audio of Jahangir Alam went viral on social media. In that audio, Jahangir Alam could be heard insulting 300,000 people martyred in the liberation war and Bangabandhu. In the aftermath, he was expelled from the party for life on November 19 of that year. Later, in view of several complaints, he was temporarily suspended from the post of mayor of Gazipur City on November 25.

On January 1, the Awami League revoked the expulsion of Jahangir Alam, the former general secretary of the Gazipur Metropolitan Awami League, through a letter signed by Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
