BRTA to take action against vehicles without retro-reflective plates from Feb 1

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has said that it will take legal action from February 1 if retro-reflective number plates with radio frequency identification (RFID) tags are not attached to motor vehicles.

An urgent notice issued on Thursday asked everyone to add retro-reflective number plates with RFID by January 31.

The notice said: “The program of adding retro-reflective number plates and RFID tags to motor vehicles was inaugurated by the prime minister on October 31, 2012 to bring order to the road transport sector.”

“Already, the government has decided to introduce an integrated management system for automatic toll collection at various bridges and the RFID attached to the motor vehicle will be used to collect the toll,” it added.

According to the notification signed by the director (engineering), BRTA, many motor vehicle owners are not installing the retro-reflective number plates and RFID tags for motor vehicles after receiving the message from the respective circle office of BRTA and although some motor vehicles are equipped with retro-reflective number plates with RFID, they are not functional.

It also said that the vehicles which do not have retro-reflective number plates with RFID need to be replaced on an urgent basis.
