Safety and Rights, a non-governmental organization, said that a total of 712 people were killed in 547 workplace accidents from January 1 to December 31 of 2022.
According to the organization's assessment, 399 workplace accidents across the nation claimed the lives of 538 individuals in 2021.
In a media discussion held in the organization's Mohammadpur office, Sekandar Ali Mina, the executive director of Safety and Rights, revealed the information.
Sekandar Ali Mina claimed that they conducted the study through news published on 11 local newspapers and 15 national dailies.
An analysis of workplace deaths in the survey found that the highest number of deaths took place in the transport sector.
A total of 333 people from transport sector lost their lives.
Following that, 170 people from service establishments (such as workshops, gas-electricity supply) died while it was 104 people from construction sector, 62 people from agriculture sector, and 43 people from factories and production establishments.
By reviewing the causes of death, it can be seen that 353 people were killed by road accidents, 84 were killed by explosions, 69 people were electrocuted, 57 people were struck by lightning, 45 people fell from a high place, 38 people were hit by heavy objects or crushed under them, 24 people drowned in water, 14 were burned, 14 died due to poisonous gas and 13 people died due to collapse.
Sekandar Ali Mina said that to prevent workplace mishaps, safety precautions must be taken in every industry.
One of the prime causes of accidents is carelessness on the part of employers about the safety of their employees at work and a lack of government inspections.
