A septuagenarian man, hailing from Phulpur in Mymensingh, walked 313km on foot to pay homage to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Tungipara upazila of Gopalganj.
Mustafa Mia, a true follower of Bangabandhu, along with his son reached Tungipara on Friday.
He stood in solemn silence for some time to show respect to the great leader.
He later offered prayers seeking peace for the victims of the August 15 carnage.
Expressing his long-standing wish to visit the grave of the Father of the Nation, Mustafa said: “I had always wished to visit the grave of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. However, it was not possible due to a number of obstacles.”
“Now that my sons are all grown up, I have managed to fulfil my long-cherished dream.”
Mustafa Mia’s son Moniruzzaman said: “My father is a true follower of Bangabandhu. He wanted to pay homage at his grave for a long time.”
He noted that they left for Tungipara on August 8.
“After crossing Mymensingh, Dhaka, Munshiganj, Madaripur and Faridpur districts, we reached Gopalganj on Friday afternoon,” Moniruzzaman added.
“Police and the upazila administration have given us all kinds of support on the way. We had no difficulty in reaching Tungipara from Phulpur on foot,” he added.
Mustafa Mia left Mymensingh’s Phulpur for Tungipara following the completion of all the formalities, including a certificate from the administration.
Mustafa had refrained from walking with his shoes on since the brutal assassination of Bangabandhu.
The 71-year-old also said that he did not wear shoes on his wedding day as well.
Later, when the verdict in Bangabandhu's murder trial was announced, he started wearing shoes again at the request of senior leaders of the Awami League.
